Your death benefits, protection for the future

Jan 31, 2023
Your pension comes with a range of benefits. Including some that could be paid out when you die.

Exactly what you’re entitled to will depend on the section of the Fund you are in.

You can find out more on the benefits page and in your Member Guide. This can be found under ‘My library’ when you log into your myFund account.

What you can do for your family today

There are 2 things you can do to help make sure your loved ones can benefit from your pension when you die.

1. Make your nominations

The Fund provides a lump sum for beneficiaries of members who die in service.

You can let the Management Committee know who you'd like the lump sum to be paid to by making a nomination.

Nominations make sure your wishes are known, and can help speed up the payment process in the event of your death.

You can make your nominations quickly and easily by logging in to your myFund account

Please remember to check your nominations regularly and to update them if needed.

2. Make sure your family know who to contact about your pension when you die

When you die, it may be up to your family to report your death to the Fund administrator, Railpen.

This needs to be done as soon as possible, particularly if you have already started taking your pension when you die. If you have, then we need to stop payments quickly, otherwise your beneficiaries may be asked to pay it back later.

You can tell Railpen about a death by:

  • Calling 0800 012 1117 and selecting Option 2: Bereavement. Or calling +44 1325 342 800 internationally
  • Emailing csu@railpen.com or
  • Writing to Railpen at PO Box 300, Darlington, DL3 6Y

Please make sure your friends/family have this information and know what they need to do when you die.

They can find more details about how to report a death, the details they’ll need to give us and how death benefits are paid on the reporting a death page
