Stay safe online - beware of pension scammers

Aug 21, 2026
Scammers often take advantage of busy times of year and are using increasingly sophisticated methods to target individuals – including pension scheme members.

As children prepare to head back to school, be extra vigilant against scams and fraudulent activity.

Your security is our priority

Keeping your pension savings safe is of utmost importance to us. Railpen, the administrator for the Scheme, has robust measures in place to protect your personal information and pension benefits. However, you also play a vital role in keeping your pension safe.

How to be vigilant against scams

  • Double check the spelling of emails, websites and links: Scammers might try to use links with slight spelling mistakes to send you a page designed to look exactly like official websites.
  • Cold calls about pensions are illegal. Be wary of free pension review offers and promises of high or guaranteed returns, too.
  • Don’t rush: Scammers often create a sense of urgency and might claim to offer ‘free’ or ‘limited’ deals.

Where to get further support about scams and security

  • You can check the Financial Conduct Authority’s Financial Services Register at register.fca.org.uk to see if firms offering advice or services are authorised and compare their contact details.

  • You can learn more about scams on the following pages and websites:

  • If you believe you have been contacted fraudulently, please report it to Action Fraud by calling 0300 123 2040 (or in Scotland, call 101). Or visit Actionfraud.police.uk/contact-us
